Breast cancer does not discriminate. It affects women of all ages, ethnicities, and lifestyles. But understanding which factors increase your risk can empower you to take proactive steps — and early action is everything.

According to the National Cancer Registry Malaysia, 1 in 23 women in Malaysia is at risk of breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and in Malaysia, it contributed 17.6% of all new cancer diagnoses between 2017 and 2021.

Risk Factors to Know

Several factors are known to increase the risk of developing breast cancer:

Biological factors

  • Increasing age — risk rises significantly after 40
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Reproductive history (early onset of menstruation, late menopause)
  • History of radiation exposure to the chest area

Lifestyle factors

  • Obesity
  • Harmful use of alcohol
  • Tobacco use
  • Postmenopausal hormone therapy

Having one or more of these factors does not mean you will develop cancer. Many women with multiple risk factors never do. But the presence of risk factors is a signal to take screening seriously.
