About Breast Cancer
-
How common is breast cancer in Malaysia? +
Breast cancer is the NUMBER ONE cancer killer of Malaysian women. It is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and in Malaysia it contributed 17.6% of all new cancer cases diagnosed between 2017 and 2021. Approximately 1 in 23 women in Malaysia is at risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime.
-
What is breast cancer? +
Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumours. If left unchecked, the tumours can spread throughout the body and become fatal. It can affect women of any age, though risk increases with age.
-
What increases my risk of breast cancer? +
Several factors raise the risk of breast cancer: increasing age, obesity, harmful use of alcohol, a family history of breast cancer, history of radiation exposure to the chest, reproductive history (such as menstrual periods that began and ended at certain ages), tobacco use, and postmenopausal hormone therapy. Having risk factors does not mean you will develop cancer — but knowing them helps you make informed choices.
-
Why does early detection matter so much? +
The 5-year survival rate for breast cancer caught at Stage I is 87.5%. If it is not detected until Stage IV, that rate drops to 23.3%. Early diagnosis improves cancer outcomes by enabling effective treatment at a lower cost, with less complex interventions. Screening saves lives.

What is iBreastExam? +
iBreastExam is a handheld, clinically validated breast screening device that uses an array of tactile pressure sensors to detect differences in breast tissue stiffness — an early indicator of lesions. It is radiation-free, painless, requires no direct human touch, and delivers results in approximately 10 minutes via a paired smartphone. It is FDA-cleared and recognised by the World Health Organization, The World Bank, and other major health bodies.
-
Who can have an iBreastExam? +
All adult women are encouraged to take an iBreastExam. No referral is needed. The device is designed for community outreach, clinic settings, and corporate wellness programmes — making screening accessible to every woman, regardless of location or prior symptoms.
-
Is it painful? +
No. The device rests lightly on the breast tissue with no compression and no radiation. The sensation is described by most women as light and comfortable. There is no pain, no recovery time, and no exposure risk.
-
How long does it take? +
The scan itself takes approximately 10 minutes from start to finish. Results are transmitted instantly to a paired smartphone and reviewed with you by a trained healthcare professional on the spot — no laboratory wait times.
-
Is iBreastExam a replacement for mammograms? +
iBreastExam is a complementary screening tool, particularly powerful for first-line screening and outreach programmes where mammography infrastructure is not available. It excels at detecting tissue stiffness differences at early stages. Your healthcare provider can advise on follow-up steps if a finding is noted.
-
How accurate is iBreastExam? +
iBreastExam is backed by multiple peer-reviewed publications and has been deployed in large-scale health equity programmes globally. Over 1,000,000 women have been examined worldwide using the technology. It carries FDA clearance and recognition from major international health organisations.
